Ambush Wins the USSSA Diamond Cup Qualifier

SATURDAY

Ambush started the tournament Saturday morning on the new turf at Bill Noble Park in Gardendale, AL against Mafia.

Coach Brad Alston won the coin toss and designated us the home team. Davis Fuentes took the hill and dominated the first inning, striking out two. Trevor Lowe registered an RBI and Ambush was up 1-0 after 1. Mafia registered two runs in the second; however a Logan Lynn walk, Hudson Holmes double and a couple of passed balls gives Ambush a 3-2 lead. Davis went three up and three down in the 3rd and Ambush breaks it open with 3 more runs. Davis again faces the minimum in the 4th and Ambush plates 4 runs in the bottom to call the game with an 8 run lead after 4 innings. Ambush wins 10-2.

Davis Fuentes (complete game) and Trevor Lowe (3-3, 2 RBI) earn the Effort Chain.

Game 2 matched Ambush with Alabaster Basebal Club. Coach Brad Alston won the toss again and chose to be the home team. John Fox Cence started on the mound and gave us 4 1/3 solid innings. Cence allowed 1 run in the first inning while Ambush tallied four on walks and an RBI by Asher Martin. John Fox went three up, three down in the second but Ambush's bats went cold as well. In the third, Cence allowed 2 while getting out of a jam. After 3, Ambush was up 4-3 after a line drive double play with the bases loaded.

Cence allowed a run on a fielder's choice however Ambush got one back in the bottom to be up 5-4 after 4 innings.

After getting one out, Jack Alston came in relief to keep the score 5-5. In the bottom of the 5th, Ambush came close, however a controversial call at the plate left the second pool play game tied.

Ambush finished pool play with a 1-0-1 record and a #2 seed for the bracket. John Fox Cence earned the Effort Chain with his performance on the mound.

SUNDAY

Ambush finally got a late game (to Coach Chris' delight) and started out bracket play at 12:30pm at the Fultondale Sports Complex. A rematch with the Mafia was in store. Logan Lynn started on the bump for Ambush and allowed one run in the first. Ambush couldn't scratch a run across in the first while Mafia plated 2 more in the second.

The bottom of the second was a SLAM DUNK for Ambush as we scored 10 runs! Asher Martin brought Walker Sumerel home with a double, John Martin Parrish, Hudson Holmes and Parker Dove all earned RBIs as the inning continued. Fuentes then had a 2 RBI single while Trevor Lowe followed up with an RBI double. Sumerel added another RBI and Jack Alston scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning off.

Up 10-3, Logan Lynn fought out of a bases loaded jam, striking out the final two outs of the inning. In the bottom, Colton Nuss legged out a hard hit single and Parker Dove knocked him in. Ambush added 2 more and went to the top of the 4th up 13-3.

Walker Sumerel came in and finished the game as Ambush headed to the championship with a 13-6 win over Mafia.

Logan Lynn (3 innings/7 Ks) and Asher Martin (double/RBI/putouts) earned the Effort Chain.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Ambush v. Select Performance Jags

As the #2 seed, Ambush led off the top of the first with 1 run. Jack Alston started on the hill and finished the first inning off with a 1-0 lead. Ambush would tally two more runs on a Colton Nuss RBI and a Logan Lynn score on a passed ball. In the bottom of the second, the Jags put up one run. Starting the third, Ambush lead 3-1. In the inning, Trevor Lowe plated two runs on a single, Asher Martin added another RBI and Ambush was leading 7-1. A series of miscues in the third had Alston getting tired and Walker finished out the inning on the mound. Starting the 4th, Ambush had a 7-6 lead. Ambush added two in the 4th and Walker Sumerel held SPJags to one. The umpire called time and Ambush lined up for the victory; however, it was called too soon and another inning was to be played. Ambush added 2 more in the Top of the 5th and Walker Sumerel held the Jags to one run again. John Fox Cence made a great catch of a line drive up the middle to seal the game! Walker Sumerel picked up the Win, going 2 2/3rds.

Walker Sumerel, Jack Alston and John Fox Cence all split the team voted Effort Chain for the Championship Game.
