Ambush “Stomps” Their Way to Another Championship

Vinemont, AL - 6.10.2023

Ambush dedicated the Arrowhead AA Tournament to Grayson Pope from Hewitt-Trussville. We donned gray ribbons on our hats to show our support.

Pool Play #1 - The day started off with Ambush taking on the Blazers from New Market, AL. Parker Dove took the mound for Ambush. Sluggish play gave up two runs early, but the 'bushboys were able to tally 5 runs in the bottom of the first. Each team plated one run a piece on the second and in the third, the Blazers tied the game at 6-6. Ambush added two in the bottom and Davis Fuentes finished off the Blazers in the 4th and Ambush won the game 8-7. Jack Alston and Logan Lynn led Ambush with two hits a piece as John Fox Cence led with three stolen bases.

Coach Chris gathered the team to regroup after the lackluster performance. No Effort Chain was given for game one.

Pool Play #2 - Ambush took Coach Chris' words to heart. the 'bushboys took on Phoenix Baseball and started out with 10 runs in the top of the first. Colton Nuss took the bump for Ambush and held Phoenix scoreless in the first. Ambush tacked on five more runs in the second and Nuss held them to one run. The boys tallied five more in the third and Nuss again held them scoreless to cruise to a 20-1 victory. Walker Sumerel, Colton Nuss and Parker Dove all tallied 2 hits and Parker Dove (4) and Jack Alston (3) led the team in RBIs. Sumerel led with 4 stolen bases and Nuss tallied two strikeouts and a pick off. Colton Nuss earned the Effort Chain for his overall performance.

John Martin Parrish earned the first ever Gold Glove Award for his defensive work at first base

The performance could not have come at a better time, as the run differential propelled the boys to a #1 seed.

Semifinals - Bracket #1 - Ambush took on the 4v5 winner in the semifinals. The #5 SBC, also from Springville, was the unlucky receiptiance of another loss to Ambush. Both teams pushed across one run in the first inning as Jack Alston commanded the mound for Ambush. In the second both teams went scoreless. Jack Alston got three groundouts in four batters. However, Ambush came up scoreless in the bottom as well. Alston was quick with it again, leaving a running on while the 'bushboys played solid defense around him. Asher Martin had a putout and Parker Dove and Walker Sumerel both had liner catches.

Hudson Holmes opened up the bottom of the third with a ringing triple! After two walks, John Fox Cence added a single and John Martin Parrish was HBP. Two more walks and two more hits by Jack Alston and Parker Dove tallied more runs and when the dust settled, a shaken SBC team was down 10-1 going into the top of the 4th. If prime fashion, Jack Alston finished off SBC in a three up, three down inning.

Jacks Alston earned the Effort Chain as he beat SBC for the third time this year.

Davis Fuentes was our Gold Glove winner.

Championship - Bracket #2 - Ambush took on the #3 seed Trojans out of Muscle Shoals for the title. Walker Sumerel commanded the hill for Ambush. The Trojans took 1 run in the first as Sumerel tallied two strikeouts. Ambush stranded Lowe off of a single and after 1, the 'bushboys were down 1-0.

Sumerel gave up another run in the second, however Jack Alston, Parker Dove and Colton Nuss all added singles to tie the game 2-2. After a quick ground and strikeout, the Trojans added two more runs on a miscue and Ambush again had to battle back.

In the bottom of the third, a Fuentes walk and a Lowe HBP set up John Martin Parrish for a game tying 2 RBI single! Jack Alston and Asher Martin added back to back hits and Ambush started the 4th inning with a 6-4 lead.

Walker Sumerel scattered two hits but only gave up one run and Ambush went to the home half up 6-5. A Davis Fuentes double added one more run in to the Ambush scorebook.

As time was running down, Fuentes came in to close out the game in the fifth. After a strikeout, Fuentes got a ground ball to third. Alston's splendid backhand/plant/throw play followed by Parrish's stretch had the Trojans down to their last out! Fuentes K'd the last batter and another top ten play by Trevor Lowe on the drop third strike throw to first sealed the Championship Game win for Ambush! Walker Sumerel (pitching) and Davis Fuentes (pitching/hitting/fielding) split the Effort Chain in the victory.

Jack Alston was rewarded the Gold Glove Award for the Championship Game.
