Ambush Claims 2023 Florida-Panhandle State Championship

Ambush traveled to Fort Walton Beach, FL to compete in the FL/Pan State Championship on Memorial Day Weekend.

Saturday, Gm1 - FL Panhandle Prospects: John Martin Parrish started on the mound for Ambush. In a dominant performance, JMP allowed a single run a piece in the first two inning while shutting down the Prospects in the final two innings. Parrish threw a complete game 1 hitter and struck out four batters. Ambush tallied 3 hits but totaled 10 runs due to walks. John Fox Cence led the way with 2 RBIs as Ambush won Pool Play Game One 10-2. John Martin Parrish earned the Effort Chain.


Saturday, Gm2 - South AL Dirtbags: Ambush was the away team and opened up the scoring with 2 runs in the first. Hudson Holmes started on the bump as Ambush took the field. The Dirtbags tallied three in the bottom on a few miscues. However, the 'bush boys counter-punched in the top of the second with 6 runs! A few hit batters and a bases clearing hit by Trevor Lowe opened the game up. Holmes then went to the bottom of the inning and held South AL to one run. Asher Martin added an RBI and the score was 9-4 going into the bottom of the third. Holmes scattered two singles and after three, Ambush was up 9-6. The fourth went quick for Ambush and Jack Alston come on to close the game out in the bottom of the inning. After two pitches, Alston had two outs. He sat down the final out with a strikeout and Ambush finished the day 2-0 with a 9-6 victory. Hudson Holmes earned the Effort Chain for his win.


Sunday, Gm3 Semifinals, HotBox: Ambush earned the #2 seed and took on #3 Hotbox. As the home team, Davis Fuentes took the mound for Ambush. A lack-luster first inning saw Hotbox jump out to a 3-0 lead. The 'bush boys tallied 4 runs in the bottom on 5 consecutive singles to start the home half. After one inning, Ambush led 4-3. Colton Nuss took a missed throw in RF and gunned a Hotbox runner out at second to open the inning. After two more batters, Hotbox went three up and three down and the 'bush boys were ready for more offense! Nine more hits were tallied in the second inning and after two, Ambush was coasting with a 15-3 led. Fuentes held them scoreless again and Ambush tallied 3 more in the bottom of the 3rd to end the game at 18-3. Fuentes, Lowe, Cence, Parrish and Dove all tallied two hits a piece and Nuss and Parrish had 2 RBIs. The entire team won the Effort Chain for the performance.


Sunday, Gm4 Championship, Pensacola Legends: The #2 Ambush faced off against #1 Legends for the title. Ambush opened up win a scoreless frame and John Fox Cence commanded the hill for Ambush. Three outfield putouts made for a three up three down inning, capped by a diving catch by Asher Martin in centerfield. The second wasn't nice to the boys either as Walker Sumerel walked, but was stranded by groundouts. Cence allowed one run but got out of a 2nd and 3rd jam.

More of the same in the third for Ambush with a three up three down inning. John Fox held the Legends at bay with a strikeout and two pop outs. Ambush could not muster up a run in the fouth and the Legends scattered two singles for two runs in the bottom. After 4 innings, Ambush was down 3-0. In the top of the fifth, Parrish singled and Walker sacrificed him to second, but the charge was stalled.

John Fox kept Ambush alive by getting two groundouts and a pop out to take us to the last inning.

In the top of the sixth, down to our last three outs, Logan Lynn walked to start us off. Parker Dove then singled, Lynn scored on a passed ball and Colton Nuss hit a shot down the LF line to bring home Parker! After an out and a fielder's choice, Ambush was down to their last out and down 3-2. Davis Fuentes was on first, and Trevor Lowe and John Fox drew walks. With the bases loaded, John Martin Parrish battled the count with multiple 2 strike foul balls. The Pensacola pitcher threw a wild pitch and Fuentes came in to tie the game! Heads up running by Lowe saw the catcher's throw go wild and he scored to take the lead on the same play!!! Cence advanced to 3rd and Sumerel hit a single to bring him home. After it was all said and done, John Fox took the mound in the 6th with a 5-3 lead.

Cence got the first hitter to pop out to first, then the second singled. On a fake bunt attempt, Cence picked off the runner at first and only one out was needed for a championship. After another single, Cence finished off the Legends with a pop out to shortstop! Ambush won the FL/Pan State Title and John Fox Cence and Asher Martin were our Effort Chain winners for their performance. John Fox Cence was also named the Tournament MVP!


The Championship Game victory was also Coach Chris Cence's 50th win at the helm for Ambush Baseball!
